Synology NAS

A couple of years ago I faced an incident where I lost a disk in my home server. This server hosted my personal files as well as all of my media. With no backup or any redundancy I was operating on the edge of what is seen as “normal”. After this incident my home IT-life has got way more easier and I’m still surprised how smooth and effective I can operate and manage all of my home data. The Synology NAS is here.

The incident made me think about the consequences of loosing data. Fortunately is was only some of my movies collection which I in time can regenerate. But what about all of my digital family pictures? Can I afford to loose them? And the answer is ‘No’! I want a setup that is easy to manage, easy to upgrade, use low power and can be used from mobile devices. This is where Synology steps in and offer way more than I could hope for. They offer a huge range of ‘Network Attached Storage’ (NAS) solutions to help everyone from private to business critical use. The range spans from single bay (1 disk) to multi bay (large disk arrays with RAID). See Synology’s products here.

I now own 2 Synology NAS devices; a DS214Play with 2 disks and a total of 4,5TB of storage and a DS115j single disk with 2TB of storage. My DS214Play is used for storing all of my personal files including a large photo library, movies collection, music collection, video surveillance and as personal cloud server. The single disk NAS is primary used for backup of my important files and as a web server. All wired to my home LAN serving lots of other home devices like iPhones, iPads, laptops, PC’s etc. And I have remote access to all services from the internet.

So if you’re looking for the most effective, secure, coolest, nicest and best NAS solution, then choose a Synology NAS. You wont be dissapointed! It is by far the best IT investment I’ve ever made.
